CONQUERING MY FEARS
The day after returning to Tampa from my west coast trip for Wanderlust 108 LA and Skinfood at Wanderlust Hollywood I received a phone call from their talent coordinator asking me to speak on sustainability and innovation at the Wanderlust Snowshoe festival in three weeks. I immediately responded, “Ummm…I’m so honored but I’ve never spoken to a large group before. Could we have this conversation in the fall after I try out toast masters, read a few more books on busting through blocks, meditate on my 20-year old fear of public speaking, and schedule a session with Gabby Bernstein to tell me I won’t pass out in public?” Jenny replied – “Nope. Sorry you and I both know this is the direction you’re going and you’re never going to be ready. Plus you asked to be in the Wanderlust family and it’s our job to help you grow, try new things and spread your message.” Ugh, nailed it. “OK, I’ll be there.”
In 2012 I headed to Bali to teach math and English to those less fortunate. I had only been on Bali for a few days and face-planted off a motorbike. Outside of Ubud, a healer gave me coconut oil for my injuries. I remember thinking – “is this guy crazy? He wants me to use coconut oil on my body?” Consuming coconut oil wasn’t foreign to me as I’m a very clean eater, but using it for skin and hair care seemed strange. But, as a result, I have a super small scar from the accident. I ate coconut oil everyday and was using it topically as well, and started piecing together that my energy was higher than it had been in years, my face cleared up and my skin was significantly softer than it had been in the past. I was using this organic oil from mother earth in a myriad of ways and it was making me healthy and beautiful. I had to share.
I’ve always been committed to starting a social enterprise – but something a little different. Why not help everyone along the journey? We are all one, but some people are really handed tough circumstances. I wanted to give everyone the same opportunities I’ve been given – weaving transparency, respect and generosity into a platform of love. After gifting friends and family with blue mason jars of coconut oil in 2013; a close friend told me to stop talking about it so much and sell it.
CONSCIOUS COCONUT | FAIR TRADE
In 2014, I created Conscious Coconut – a social enterprise fueled by love. Our fair trade, organic coconut oil is conveniently and sustainably packaged in a 3.4 ounce travel-ready tube with a bamboo lid. I loved coco so much after living in Asia, I had to take it everywhere with me! Our cold-pressed, virgin coconut oil is certified through Fair Trade USA. Our market-based approach empowers farmers to get a fair price for their harvest – which helps workers create safe working conditions, and provides a good living wage rather than creating dependency on aid. We ensure farmers follow internationally-monitored environmental standards and commit to organic conversion, reforestation, water conservation and environmental education. By establishing Fair Trade prices, farmers are able to practice sustainable growing techniques and are supported in learning new skills that will preserve their land for generations to come. We also work directly with our three sustainable packaging factories in China. We have close and personal relationships with all of our suppliers and consider ourselves a team.
PAYING IT FORWARD
Once our tubes arrive in the States, 120 adults with physical and mental disabilities package every unit for Conscious Coconut at the MacDonald Training Center located in Tampa, Florida. Disabled adults are productive, contributing and valued members of our community. We believe the people we serve should be afforded the same opportunity to provide for themselves and to give back to their community.
And for EVERY tube sold we give a child a meal through Feeding America. We are committed to raising awareness for childhood hunger in the United States. More than 21 million children receive free or reduced-priced meals through the National School Lunch Program during the school year. We love their BackPack Program, which helps kids eat on the weekends. Bags of food are distributed to more than 450,000 children at the end of each week. Since our launch at Wanderlust Chicago last May we’ve already fed 18,000 kids through our one to one platform!
The countdown was on and I had many a-sleepless-night wondering what the heck I would talk about in the Speakeasy (not that I’m ever short on words!). I had my designer create some beautiful slides with photos showing our platform (which I never used), I practiced in front of the mirror a few times, and threw myself at the University of Tampa to speak in front of their MBA students.
SPREADING THE MESSAGE
But walking around the beautiful little village of Snowshoe, West Virginia outfitted in the creative, inspiring, life-force that is Wanderlust – I knew I was home and all was well. I was surrounded by my Wanderlust family – who has been there for all my firsts. From selling my first tube ever at Wanderlust Chicago, to our first pop-up at Wanderlust Hollywood where they also sell our coconut oil and we hosted our first event, Skinfood. From helping us create and publish our first ad in the Wanderlust Journal to bringing Wanderlust 108 to my hometown Tampa for the first time. It was only appropriate that the first time I spoke publicly was in the rolling hills of West Virginia. The endless smiles and abundant positive energy is contagious at a Wanderlust Festival.
You’ll try that sunrise yoga or new pose– or paddleboarding, ecstatic dance, meditation hike, tea or juice you’ve always had your eye on. You’ll take classes with teachers that will change your practice forever. You’ll stay up boogying with DJ. Drez until midnight covered in neon body paint hugging people you’ve just met. Because that’s why you’re here. To express yourself fully, put yourself out there, banish those fears and radiate your authentic, beautiful self. To know you’re surrounded by the kindest, non-judgmental, most loving community and this is exactly where you’re supposed to be.
Sitting cross-legged on stage in the warm, ambient lighting of the Speakeasy on Sunday morning I felt like the lighthouse I pray to be everyday. I felt so grateful and privileged to be given the platform to spread my message of love for an hour. Wanderlust has helped me grow into becoming the woman I’ve always wanted to be, fulfilling my life’s purpose and I know they’ll do the same for you.
